M'sian youths still tuned in to mass media

Petaling Jaya - Most single youngsters in Malaysia aged 15 to 24 years have not yet abandoned mass media, despite the image of them as being glued to the Internet.

A GroupM Malaysia 3D survey found that four out of 10 top weekday activities among them are watching television, reading the newspaper, listening to the radio and using the phone.

GroupM's latest monthly newsletter MediaMatters revealed the results of the poll which covered 3,000 respondents aged 15 to 49 years. The survey period was end-March to early June.

The media communications group said reading newspapers was more of a daytime activity while watching TV got more popular from 7pm and tapered off from 12 midnight.

During the weekends, the four communication-based activities remained among their top 10 activities.

"In fact, watching television starts earlier and listening to radio moves up a few levels to 6th ranking on weekends from 9th on weekdays," it said.

Shopping and visiting malls were the popular weekend activities between 12 noon and 10pm for these so-called "fledglings", MediaMatters said.

Young Malaysian men spend their weekends differently from the women.

"Among the top 10 activities that young men are most likely to engage in are riding their motorbikes and chilling out at mamak stalls.

"Reading the newspaper is ranked third," the report said.

Among the young women, socialising occurs during shopping and visiting the malls.

Watching television remains popular, but reading the newspaper is ranked after shopping.

"Activation and disseminating information on brands in shopping malls would be more ideal to reach these young women while increasing presence in mamak stalls may attract the male fledglings," the newsletter said.

Surprisingly, using the computer is not on the top 10 activities list.

However, working or using the computer seems more significant on weekdays among fledglings in market centres.

Ownership of computers and notebooks are higher among them compared to other urban and rural fledglings.

The report concluded: "Mass media like television, newspaper, radio and mobile phone are still a big part of the fledglings in Malaysia. It is how they use media and at what part of the day that matters."

Bad Breath Joke

A young couple decided to wed. As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive. Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other.

The Groom-to-be, hoping to overcome his fear, decided to ask his father for advice. “Father,” he said, “I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage.”

His father replied, “Do you love this girl?”

“Oh yes, very much,” he said,” but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I’m afraid that my fiancĂ© will be put off by them.”

“No problem,” said dad, “all you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed.” Well, to him this seemed a workable solution.

The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to discuss her problem with her mom.” Mom,” she said, “When I wake up in the morning my breath is truly awful.”

“Honey,” her mother consoled, “everyone has bad breath in the morning.”

“No, you don’t understand. My morning breath is so bad, I’m afraid that my fiancĂ© will not want to sleep in the same room with me.”

Her mother said simply, “In the morning, get straight out of bed, and head for the kitchen and make breakfast. While the family is busy eating, go to the bathroom and brush your teeth. The key is, not to say a word until you’ve brushed your teeth.”

“I shouldn’t say good morning or anything?” the daughter asked.

“Not a word,” her mother affirmed.

“Well, it’s certainly worth a try,” she thought.

The loving couple were finally married. Not forgetting the advice each had received, he with his perpetual socks and she with her morning silence, they managed quite well. That is, until about six months later. Shortly before dawn one morning, the husband wakes with a start to find that one of his socks had come off. Fearful of the consequences, he frantically searches the bed. This, of course, wakes his bride and without thinking, she asks, “What on earth are you doing?”

“Oh, my god,” he replies, “you’ve swallowed my sock!”

CROCODILE SHOCK AT TELUK CHEMPEDAK BEACH

KUANTAN, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- A stray estuarine crocodile shocked people at the popular Teluk Chempedak beach here last night.

The three-metre-long reptile, weighing about 200 kg, was promptly caught by eight personnel of the Civil Defence Department from Kuantan after they were summoned at 8 pm.

Kuantan Civil Defence assistant officer Mohamad Irwanis Seni said the crocodile was handed over to the Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department at midnight.

Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Director Khairiah Mohd Shariff said the animal was released into its natural habitat at 1.30 am today.

She said the crocodile had most probably strayed from its natural habitat along the Kuantan River during high tide and was unable to return when the tide ebbed.

She also said that the Teluk Chempedak beach was not a playground of crocodiles and the people should not fear going there.

Rainy Roads Driving

Roads are dirty places. Between tires stirring up gravel and engines dripping oil and other fluids, a lot of oily and slick substances build up on roads. That's why roads are at their slickest almost immediately after it starts raining. The water brings those oils to the surface, making it sneaky-slick.

If you get caught in a slick situation and your car starts gliding or hydroplaning, don't panic or slam on the brakes. Take your foot off the gas and gradually press the brakes, making sure not to turn the steering wheel. To avoid hydroplaning:

make sure your tires aren't bald

easy does it around turns

if you can, go around puddles

Some countries require drivers to have their headlights on if it's raining. Also, be aware of thunderstorm warnings. If a thunderstorm starts while you're driving and visibility is poor, pull over and wait it out. Don't run the risk of being struck by lightning — stay in your car and pull as far off the road as safely possible.

SHAHIDAN CALLS FOR BLOCKING FACEBOOK IF CONTENTS POSE SECURITY THREAT

KANGAR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim today called for the blocking of the Facebook social networking website if its contents continue to pose a threat to national security.

He said a Facebook account holder was found to have taken advantage of the technology to insult Islam and leaders of Malaysia.

"If the website content poses a threat to national security and insults Islam, then it is unnecessary to have Facebook," he told reporters after accompanying Perlis Facebook Association committee members to lodge a report at the Kangar police station on the insults hurled at Prime Minister Seri Najib Tun Razak and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on a Facebook account.

The report was lodged by the association''s deputy president, Mohd Faizuddin Ismail, at about 5.30 pm.

Shahidan said a report would also be lodged at the State Islamic Religious Department as the holder of the Facebook account had also insulted Islam, and added that the insults hurled at Najib and Mahathir were discovered by a member of the association on Nov 29.

Shahidan, who is Tambun Tulang assemblyman, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the Malaysian Islamic Development Department and the National Fatwa Council should act against the holder of the Facebook account.
